A Brief History of the Boston Red Sox

Founded in 1901 as the Boston Americans, the Red Sox, as they were renamed in 1908, were formed as a way for the newly-formed American League to compete with the National League Boston Braves in Boston. In 1903, the Boston Americans defeated the heavily favored Pittsburgh Pirates in the first ever best of nine World Series five games to three. In the following several years, the Sox would win four more Series, one each in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918. Following the 1919 season, the team owner, Harry Frazee, sold one of their star players, Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees. This marked the beginning of an 86-year championship drought, punctuated by numerous heartbreaking defeats with a title within reach.

While the Babe Ruth sale is the most notorious deal between the Red Sox and Yankees, there were a number of other notable deals that Harry Frazee made before the Ruth sale. Perhaps the most disliked deal was one in which Frazee sent talented outfielder Duffy Lewis, Ernie Shore, and pitcher Dutch Leonard, who had a rock-bottom ERA of 0.96 in 1914. In return, the Boston Red Sox received four players, Slim Love, Ray Caldwell, Roxy Walters, and Frank Gilhooley along with $15,000 from the New York Yankees. The trade was considered by many in Boston to be a terrible one, as all three players given up by Frazee were incredibly talented and contributed greatly to the championship teams of the 1910s.

The Sox plummeted in the standings for the next two decades, never finishing within 20 games of first place in the 1920s and 1930s. For one eight-year stretch from 1925-1932, they had one of their worst stretches in team history, averaging over 100 losses a year. In 1933, the Red Sox were bought by Tom Yawkey, and the team's luck started to turn around. Yawkey skillfully acquired several talented players, including one of the best pitchers of the modern era, Lefty Grove.

In 2004, the Sox made history by becoming the first team in the history of any professional sport to overcome a three games to none deficit in a best of seven series, defeating the New York Yankees in a historic series. The comeback was followed by a clean sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, ending the team's 86-year wait for a World Series title. Following the 2004 championship, they won again in 2007, and another in 2013. With the 2013 World Series, the Red Sox were the first team in the 21st century to win three championships.

Information about the City of Boston

The history of Boston, MA is an interesting one. It was founded in 1630 by Puritan colonists from England. After it was founded it became the center of financial, political, religious, educational, and commercial hub of the New England area.

One of the major things that happened in Boston was the American Revolution. This was because the British fought for the Boston Tea Party and the patriots who fought back. They fought the British in Boston and this is where the battle at Bunker Hill came to be in Charlestown.

In the 19th century it was the financial center for the United States. One of the things that it did was fund railroads across the nation. During the Civil War, it was the center for a lot of anti-slavery activities.

In the early 20th century the first woman from a Irish Catholic community was elected to the Boston School Committee. Another thing that happened at the start of the 20th century was automobiles. It was the home to Porter Motor Company.

In the 21st century the city has become one of the world's 100 most expensive cities to live in. In 2004 it was the host city for the Democratic National Convention. In 2013 the Boston Marathon had two bombs go off which killed three people and injured hundreds of others.

The city saw many transportation projects come to fruition. In the 2000s there was an expansion on the mass transit system and development of the bus rapid transit.

The city has expanded in two ways over the years. It expanded through annexation of neighboring municipalities and landfill. During the years of 1630 through 1890 the city tripled in size by land reclamation by filling in mud flats and marshes and filling up the gaps between wharves that were along the waterfront.
